Faceless {Future} Development?

…Wanted to share some recent activity that’s been keeping me up at night.

I’m fascinated.

And wondering where it will all lead, what it means for the future of Birmingham, of social media, of urban development, of how we just get things done…

Within the past few weeks, I’ve received two new Twitter followers.

{Brief pause for shameless self promotion:  Don’t follow me on Twitter? Why not?! I’m a hoot! Jump here to keep up with yours truly.)

Okay, back to those Twitter followers…

Both are structures, buildings - one existing, the other hypothetical.

Neither have a person (read: human) profile, but rather a cause.

Both represent urban development in City Center, projects that would both (in their own right) create major momentum for downtown Birmingham.

So, why the sleepless nights?

Well, I can’t stop thinking about the possibilities. Just the “what if” of either situation is compelling enough to venture out for more information, to tell friends and colleagues, to buy in to this notion of cause-driven social networking.

I’m also infatuated with the prospect of how the development of a city may look in the future. Could it really become about community-driven support through these new, modern ways of building engagement and awareness? Is it even possible to create a spark this simply and quickly? Would city leadership (and private investors) balk at the very idea?

Let me go ahead and set you on your way… We can discuss this more later.

The two entities I’m referring to are:

@UABStadium {UAB Stadium: “Twitter account in support of an on campus stadium for UAB *Disclaimer: This account is not affiliated with UAB.”}

and

@TJTower {The Thomas Jefferson: “For nearly 30 years, this magnificent Birmingham icon has been ignored.  Not anymore…} – *This one also has a website affiliated with it: http://www.tjtower.com.

Discuss amongst yourselves.  Are there others? What comes next? Comment, please. Let’s do exactly what they want us to do. Let’s create conversation, energy, and a little upward motion…
