Once a top culinary destination in downtown Birmingham, The La Paree, located on 5th Avenue North near the financial district, has been closed since 2003. On my visits to that part of City Center, I always give pause to this sign of Birmingham’s past… I can’t help but wonder what my favorite dish might have been.
And, speaking of favorite dishes in Birmingham, I do have my fair share. Here are jut a few. Please leave a comment and share some of your own!
Rojo (Highland Park) - Chipolte and Mushroom Burrito. It comes with a green salad and I’m sure that’s only to offset the richness of the dish. It’s more than enough food for one, although I never leave any on the plate.
Saw’s Soul Kitchen (Avondale) – Hmmm. Everything. But especially the cheeseburger. It’s huge. It’s messy. It’s comfort.
Chez Fonfon (Five Points South) - The shrimp and avocado salad is something that will need to be included in my final meal. It’s creamy and fresh and always, always, satisfies.
We’re hungry now, yes?
I’ll take a brief moment to apologize for my hiatus over the last few weeks. Posts have been few and far between, but that doesn’t mean I’m not out there stirring up some good stories. Sometimes it’s more fun to be in the story, rather than to merely tell it.

And, for goodness sake, go enjoy the Magic City this weekend! The forecast looks sunny and swell.

I’m going back today to Chez Fon Fon to get their Shrimp and Avacado Salad. It’s magical.
