Powell School, the Victorian Gothic structure built for Birmingham’s first school, was nearly destroyed in a fire last year. It sits on the southwest corner of 24th Street and 6th Avenue North, its future unknown.

I snapped this last week from my car, on the way to Linn Park. The structure seems to whistle and sing its own sad tune, sung by shadows and cinder.
Is it a symbol of the hollow hope in Birmingham? Let’s hope not.

I visited this school a number of years ago when I did an accreditation visit. Mrs. Jones was still the principal. This school has such a history. It’s really sad to see it still in such disrepair.
It sure is, Virginia. I’m crossing my fingers that this historic building will get the second chance it deserves.
