So I’ve been down in our basement all night, sucking up cobwebs and sawdust and continuing my weeklong spring cleaning kick.
And when I came upstairs, I had no less than three text messages and a dozen emails.
I suppose the Birmingham Board of Education is feeling the need to purge, just like me.
Are you ready for this? ‘Cause I wasn’t.
Dr. Craig Witherspoon’s job is on the line.
{Read all about it here and here.}
I know. My mouth is still gaping open. And I’m pissed. I’m *really* pissed.
Whether or not you have a child in a Birmingham city school, and whatever your plans may be tomorrow, on Good Friday, please, let me beg you to ACT.
At 5p.m., the Birmingham Board of Education will gather to discuss what is believed to be the termination of Witherspoon’s contract.
For whatever it’s worth, I *firmly* believe this man is an asset to our city, to our schools, to our community. And no matter what your opinion, let’s face reality – Birmingham city schools cannot possibly bear yet another turnover. Witherspoon has this system moving FORWARD. It has a long way to go, but it’s GOING…
So, there are a few things I need you to do.
First, call your school board representative first thing tomorrow morning. Let them know you support Dr. Witherspoon and that you demand stability for our schoolchildren.
Next, send out an email to your work colleagues, to your church group, your fellow soccer moms, your Facebook friends, your drinking buddies, your BFFs, your homies, your mom. Let them all know that their voice is critical, too. Ask them to do exactly what you’ve just done. Call. Cause a ruckus. Generate some fear in this dysfunctional, wretched school board.
Finally, meet me at the BOE building at 5p.m. (or earlier) to stand together in full support of what we know is best for Birmingham and its future.

Here’s one reason (and another, and another) that I believe in Dr. Witherspoon.
Help.
That’s all I know to say, Birmingham.
Help.
