Given it’s Wednesday and the sun in shining, I suggest you take a break from whatever task is at hand.  Steal a moment for yourself and allow your left brain to rest a while.  Now, get that right brain out for some much-needed exercise!

Let me make this easy for you…

Recently I met Monica Carmichael, Director of Development at the Cahaba River Society.  (Plug:  Hope you’ve already scored your tickets to the Cahaba River Fry-Down, September 25, by the way.  The rest of the cool kids have theirs…no pressure or anything.)

As if saving Alabama’s drinking water wasn’t enough, this wife and mother of two is also a member of our very talented local artist pool (who recently celebrated her first showing at Rojo).  Months went by and I had no idea that Mrs. Carmichael spends her “spare” time creating intricate pieces of delicious art involving white thread on white paper (my, I hope I got that right).  When I found out I was completely in awe.  Goes to show you just never know another person’s full story…

So, here’s Carmichael’s blog, “. of paper and things .”, where you’ll find daily inspirations that focus on what moves her as an artist.   Quite honestly, I’m blown away at the uniqueness and variety of the posts… and as soon as I saw her blogroll I thought to myself, “Leapin’ Legos!  This is a woman after my own heart.

Now I can’t stop thinking about her.  I wonder what inspires Carmichael.  Does she find it in her work preserving the Cahaba River watershed?  Does she find it in the architecture and fellow artists within the city?  Is she, at all, even inspired by Birmingham?  It’s completely appropriate for me to wonder such things…one must always be questioning, right?  Give me a cool person in Birmingham and watch me run through the laundry list of questions of or relating to their connection to the City.  It’s just become part of my “game”…

One must always be questioning.  Yes.  Take time, Magic City friends, to ask questions.  Talk to each other.  Find out more about who you deal with day in and day out.  You’d be surprised at what stories we all have to tell…

I’ll keep asking Monica questions and promise to update you all on when her next exhibition will take place.  In the meantime, stay inspired…your right brain thanks you.

P.S. – I wish I had photos of Monica’s work to share, but I don’t.  Like all good artists, she’s totally modest.  Let’s see a show of hands – who wants to see a few pieces? !  (Help me out here…I know where to find her and I bet I could twist her arm, with a little help from my friends…)

Almost a full time job to just stay inspired with a bloggroll like that. Impressive. A quote from E. W. Howe to motivate a little bit more sharing of her work: “A modest man is usually admired, if people ever hear of him.”
