To begin, the University of Alabama football team brought home a ferocious prize – the National Championship title and this crystal egg that you may have even seen on display at your local Wal-Mart. (Did you miss it? Get more info here at RammerJammerismyReligion.com .)
Next came the Red Nose Run. The Red Nose Run is a wonderful trek through the streets of downtown (take your pick from 10M or 5K race, or 1K Fun Run). The 6th annual event benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama. (Too chicken to run in the freezing cold? Find out how to make your own contribution here .)
And we're off! Sweet Pea and I braved the snowy morning to support the Ronald McDonald House at the 6th Annual Red Nose Run in downtown Birmingham
Truth be told, I walked the route. There was no running involved. It was a very pleasant morning (complete with circus characters and snow). I will absolutely walk this 5K route again because the adventure is just so delicious! I want to visit places like 3rd Avenue South, Morris Avenue, the lobbies of structures like the Redmont Hotel, the public library, the Tutweiler, and the Regions building . (Want to see what we saw? Check out the race route here…See you out on the city streets!)
Later in the day, after a hearty bowl of soup and very warm shower, we conducted the detailed walk-through at our (hopeful) Magic City Nest. ( I won’t jinx it by telling you where, but I will share my new favorite resource: www.the35212.com .)
The potential nest is very Birmingham. Why, you ask? Because the back deck view overlooks a steam-blowing steel mill. And, from the middle bedroom you can see the downtown skyline. (It’s a distant skyline, but it’s still a skyline.)
Here I sit, flipping through paint chips and wondering what will look best in the afternoon light, what will complement our small, but beloved art collection, how we might enhance the interior of our new home. I get so excited about phrases like “Hotel St. Francis Fawn” (a nod to my honeymoon), “Muddy Mississippi” (in honor of my native land), “La Fonda Fiesta Blue” (a personal favorite ATL eatery)…
Tomorrow no doubt will be another busy day here as we settle deeper into the culture of Birmingham. The pond will probably stay frozen for at least a few more days. I’ll make this a great time to pick out paint colors for our highly anticipated Magic City Makeover. It would take a lot of work to make that house our home and I’m kinda’ hoping it does. Why, I think I’ll even upgrade to perennials in the Spring…we’re going to be here for a while.
(Credits: Thanks, G the Realtor, for your Saturday afternoon. Much gratitude to the University of Alabama football team for making us all proud. And, thank you to my very supportive in-laws who will continue to house the three of us (plus cat) as we create our very own nest here in the Magic City. )
